Second skin of coolness

Philip_Huang_-_Vogue_Homme_

These days it is almost impossible to picture a modern man’s wardrobe without leather jackets because every man from the age of innocence knows that wearing one takes him to a completely new universe of coolness and masculinity. It makes him look modern without trying too hard. It creates a classy timeless look. It gives him inner power to attract women looking for her own Marlon Brando with a strong leather clad shoulder they can rely on. Plus, lets not forget that this comfortable piece of clothing protects from elements whatever the weather and adds a stylish layer to any outfit.

Buying a leather jacket is certainly a very wise investment. They are made to last and the longer you have one the better it looks. A variety of styles, colours and types of leather allows anyone to find something unique to suit their lifestyle, budget and seasonality.  However, no matter what piece you go for, it’s not only about the designer name or colour. Good leather jacket is all about the fit. It should look sleek and fitted to your body creating straight lines with a snug feel to them. If the fit it wrong, then it doesn’t matter whether you are wearing a Bottega, Gucci, RIck Owens or TopMan - it will never look right.

Secondly, think about the colour. Most men tend to go for black as a safe and classic option, but warm chocolates and tan would look just as, if not more, beautiful, classy and often expensive than what you actually pay for them. Black can be combined with virtually any other colour, so you can dress it up by pairing with smart trousers and crisp shirt, or down – with your favourite jeans and chunky knitwear. Browns and tans would create a gorgeous palette when mixed with blues, whites and greys.

If the sensible approach is not something your joie de vivre soul needs, blue or orange beauties can also be found in some high end designer stores. After all, why not? We only live once. Your best best is to try what’s available and feels right, but personally tan is what I am always drawn to and black is something that may, occasionally, take my memories back to post-soviet Moscow.

It’s also equally important to mention the quality of leather. Luckily, long gone those days when a leather jacket was able to stand on its own and would make a “I am a new leather jacket” squeaky kind of noise every time you move. Today the lamb or goat hide leather is buttery soft and huggable. Suede is a beautiful choice, but worn effect leathers at AllSaints are also great if you are after a “been there – done that” aged look.

Leather jackets come in all kinds of styles, from bomber to motorcycle to classic blazer. Choosing a perfect one is a very special and personal experience. After all, you are choosing a wardrobe statement that will never go out of style.
