CHRISTMAS FRIDAY, ON A THURSDAY

rainy days and sundays always make me smile...

This year, being time poor and idea rich is actually turning out to be not so bad. I've hit upon what I think could be the ultimate answer for peeps in my position. Customisation. So everyone will be getting something a little home-made and a little bit store bought this Christmas. This is part one of what will be a pair of cushions for a pair of people that like nothing better than rainy days and a good lie in. The other cushion will have the same clouds but with a rainbow above it. Nice sentiment I think. And even nicer that I actually can get them made, rather than just imagining how nice it would be to make them, which is what would no doubt happen if I had to make the whole cushion cover from scratch rather than just making a plain one look better.

I like to think of this as less a lazy craft option and more a clever craft option for working mums who now spend most of their spare time picking up toys and doing laundry. One down, one to go and 90 days to do it, along with the other seventeen presents on the list. Wish me luck.

BAKE OFF OF THE WEEK

C'mon Baby, Eat the Rich

Unless you've been living under the probverbial rock, you'll know that the wait is finally over and tonight is most definately the night... That's right people Celebrity Masterchef begins on Channel Ten at 7.30pm EST. We, and thousands of food loving dorks like us, will be found eyes glued to the telly, phones off the hook, watching both famous and infamous battle nerves, pressure tests and mystery box challenges all while trying to please the discerning palettes of three of our favourite gentlemen in Australia... No make that the World. In honour of the evenings proceedings we will all be donning the cravat at HML HQ (and yes that includes all interns, partners, siblings, mothers, and pets). We've even inlcuded this ever so polite (and dubiously soundtracked) instructional  How To Tie A Cravat video for you to follow, on the off chance that you may also want to make like Mr Preston and tie one on, so to speak.

Who knows, get it right and Gary might even reward you with a top score.

Virtual dinner party invitation

Today I am hosting a virtual dinner party and you are all invited! But before anything else, I'd like to thank The Toothfairy who tagged me. She is such a witty beautiful adorable sweet girl who works as a dentist (so yes, she is VERY intelligent, so she does not only posses beauty but also brains) and writes a blog (where does she find time for everything God only knows...).

The question is: If you were going to allow us to spend a night at your home, we'd like to know the following:

1. What books are on your favourite shelf?
Actually, I don't have shelves yet, so my books are all over the floor at the moment. In nice neat piles, but on the floor. If I have to pick three, then the list would look like this:

“Lolita” by Vladimir Nabokov
“Alchemist” by Paolo Coelho
“A dog’s heart” by Mikhail Bulgakov

2. What DVD are on your favourite shelf?
Again, no shelves. Everything is in a box and away. I am not a kind of person who displays DVDs on a shelf. And even if I had shelves than I'd use them for the books, flowers and pretty things that please my eye, not videos/DVDs.
It's difficult to choose just three movies I'd watch over and over again, so I'll go with "Under the Tuscan Sun", "Family Stone" and "Because I said so".

3. What are your two favourite cook books?

Can I pick three? Please....

Michel Roux's Finest Desserts
New British Classic by Gary Rhodes
The Ultimate Recipe book by BBC Good Food magazine

4. Select 1-3 recipes you will cook for your special guests.

Starter: double baked cheese souffle with white grape sauce
Main: wild mushroom risotto
Dessert: white chocolate mousse cake

5. What drinks will be available?
Prosecco and still/sparkling water and then coffee.
I must confess, I don't really drink. I think it only happens a few times a year and if I do, then it's either prosecco, Kindzmarauli (gorgeous Georgian wine), port or cognac.

And I'd love to visit Sofie, Haute World, Anya, Sarah, OceanDreams and CoutureCarrie. I am accepting your invitations, darlings! Whenever you are ready. ;)

DOWNLOAD OF THE DAY

paper planes

yes, we love a free pattern to play with here at hml. And this week, now that i'm back at work in the office,  I found mmyself wandering through the ether looking at some of my favourite things to do with the recycling paper pile next to the photocopier. I love the paperfoldables site. Lots. Brian is a complete genius if you ask me, and i'm putting him up there as the zen master of indie-origami (a new genre I think I just invented). Just look at this cardboard typewriter he made for canal publishing...

I love even more that today he's given me the ammunition to amuse myself enormously by downloading this hilarious mustachioed hipster in skinny jeans and kanye shades, straight from his site to sit atop my own computer at work.

And who knows, what with Celebrity Masterchef starting this week (and yes we ladies are VERY EXCITED) I might even be inspired to whip up both the seriously stereotyped italian chef for me and senior baguette for Ramona. If only he made a Matt Preston foldable we'd be all set for tomorrow night.

Not that i'll be doing any of this during work hours of course... honest boss.

SHOWS OF THE WEEK

international
under the bridge downtown

It's the 13th annual DUMBO festival, and we wish we were in Brooklyn (again!) and not just because it would enable Ramona to sit awestruck in the audience of the Martha show in her downtime. I was lucky enough to see a very crazy John Zorn 'radical improvisation' night of sound performance featuring Mike Patton, 20 marshall amps and an assortment of crazy manipulated microphones at what I remember being early dumbo fest event which of course made me feel suitably hip and very underground at the time (but ok I was a lot younger and more impressionable, and perhaps a little influenced by hazy substances back then). These days thnkfully you dont need to be either or even need to travel all the way to NYC to enjoy what the festival has to offer... you can check it all out online here  and follow the links to see it all via flickr, podcast or our beloved youtube. We love Molly Dillworths idea of creating roof top paintings to be viewed via google earth, Kell Condon’s Boxes/Seconds which record one second of NYC’s total yearly curbside cardboard through pinhole cameras made from that very cardboard and Nelson Loskamp’s Chaircut which features free electro-sonic, haircuts via amplified scissors.

Dani Marti has another gem of a show on at Arc One Gallery entitled Time is the Fire in Which we Burn. In 2007 we loved the faux pearl work "Pleasure Chest" so we were excited to see what new work he'd come up with. We're very happy to report that alongside the usual explorations of woven rope and rubber this time we've got a brilliant piece that at first glance appears to be an oversized lichen and mould landscape up close however you see that it's constructed entirely from a comibinaton of steel and copper scrubbing pads. Genius.
Until October 17 @ Arc One Gallery Flinders Lane, Melbourne

dress to impress

As you all probably know by now the Valentino biopic The Last Emperor, chronicalling the man with the tan's last year at the helm of the house of Valentino, is on at just about every cinema in town. Those who haven't yet made it into the cinema should do so, immediately. We know that there's also District 9 to see (yeah we're total sci-fi nerds too) but before you get there get some of this and be reminded of what Fashion is really about: brilliantly eccentric overly tanned middle aged italian men and their pugs.

Psycho-logic by Christian Louboutin

Loved this short Hitchcock-inspired film written and directed by Christian Louboutin to celebrate the opening of his LA boutique. A nightmare that turns into a dream for gorgeous Elisa Sednaoui who finds herself in Heaven full of glitter and, of course, Louboutins (that as far as I can see all come in her size :) ) and then gets a chance to meet Monsieur Louboutin himself. I was also very happy to see that Mika is back and his music is great as always because I adore him (and yes, I've just ordered his new album).

GAME OF THE YEAR

go saints!

One thing that unites the crazy ladies of HML - our love of the game. Yes its true we love nothing more than heading off to the G for a dead of winter match. We were hoping for a Collingwood (Beck) St Kilda (Ramona) final but alas it was not to be and quite frankly we aren't too hopeful for Ramona's beloved Saints today. All the same the house has been decorated, Thom has been dressed and the hamburgers are ready to grill!

Go Saints!!!!

Modern minimalism: i-toc watch and GIVEAWAY

"Design must always remember function otherwise it becomes art or sculpture. It may become beautiful art or sculpture but if the function is lost, forgotten or neglected the design has failed."
- Sean Zoega

I am feeling really happy today. Not only because the sun is shining, the sky is blue and I had my delicious cup of coffee in the morning, but also because I love receiving presents and surprises and today was one of those days. I opened the door and there was a postman holding a small box. It was my new watch sent to me by Sean Zoega, the designer of these beautiful unique creations.

Sean Zoega is an unorthodox designer who has managed to synthesise the supposedly opposing disciplines of engineering and design. Originally graduating as an electronics engineer, Sean quickly employed his skills in the areas of meta art providing music synthesizers to major artists of the time (Jean Michel Jarre, Hawkwind, Brian Eno etc.)

“The interplay of science and art has always for me been the critical stimulation of human creativity, be it the invention of colour pigments or dyes that change art and fashion forever or the synthesizer that has made possible new music with sounds that have never before existed in human experience."

Before the i-toc was born, Sean has been busy creating recording environments for international festivals such as Holders Season in Barbados to more orthodox recording studios for K-Klass and Ian Brown. He has also created audio/visual installations all over the world for large corporates such as Disney, Cable & Wireless, Wellcome Trust… even the NHS. His work on psychoacoustics also led to his developments in artificial intelligence which culminated in the HyperTeach AI learning engine.

“Through all my work with music, sound and visuals I came to realize I was always slicing time, applying textures (aural and visual) and then rebuilding the parts to create a coherent whole…art and design are all about time. This was what sparked my interest in redesigning the watch. This has taken over ten years of my life to develop and has culminated in the i-toc. The i-toc is simple, but it wasn’t easy."

I adore my new watch. Personally, I think this is one of those time pieces that won't go unnoticed. This gorgeous sample of minimalistic design has already been compared to EleeNo and Issey Miyake watches, but unlike its designery siblings does not cost a fortune.

It's unique, it makes you smile, it's unisex'y, it comes in 6 colours from classic black and grey to vibrant orange (that was my choice), red, blue and purple. The i-toc’s graduated circles present a more intuitive and beautiful way to view time, and the distinctive visual pattern is constantly changing and is super easy to read. Each colour is limited to 200 to 500 pieces, which makes the watch even more special and desirable.

If you are tempted and would like to see and read more, please visit the i-toc website.

So are you tempted yet? Then the best news are still to come because now one of my wonderful followers can actually receive an i-toc watch as a present from Sean Zoega himself! All you need to do is to visit his website to choose the colour and leave a comment here (don't forget to mention what colour you'd prefer). You have a week to enter. The competition closes on 30 September 2009 and the lucky winner will be announced on 2 October 2009.

If you don't win or prefer not to follow newfashiontodayblog ;) you can still buy your little treasure here and receive a 10% discount. The discount code will be sent to you via e-mail, so I'd appreciate it if you could take a couple of minutes to send me your e-mail address.

Good luck!

EVENT OF THE WEEK

salute to nan and pop
Weird day for the ladies of HML -sort of living in parallel universes. While Beck was judging Fringe Furniture I was judging the Veterans Affairs Craft Awards at the Austin Repat Hospital Red Cross Centre.

It's one of those once-a-year occasions I've really come to look forward to (this year is my 3rd!) It's the only volunteering job I do at the moment and I see it as a great honour.

Like all hobby craft it swings from the sublime to the,er, eccentric...

One of my favourite makers is May Brown who enters the most amazing creations every year. Her Party Penguins came complete with streamers and balloons! Sadly her work is never for sale, I'm considering a commission...

I was very taken with this Frenchy chic quilt...

And this simple embroidered tablecloth...

And of course there are always a couple of magnificent model boats.

To see past years highlights (including Mays work) you can go back in time here and here .

London fashion week: Burberry Prorsum

Christopher Bailey made me proud of being British. His Spring/Summer 2010 collection was such a magnificent delight of soft dreamy marshmallow pastels, glamour, gorgeousness, youth and freshness that I had an urge of hugging my TV (since I couldn't give a hug to Mr. Bailey himself). The dresses created of draped tulle and silks were a pure temptation, the trench coats with their sculpted draping sleeve details could be worn as an evening dress and the shoes made of draped soft leather caused a craving in me. I adored a beautiful combination of delicate fabrics of the dresses and leather belts that added a modern touch, a touch of chic safari trend, the buttery softness of bags, the amber bracelets, the natural make-up. I loved EVERYTHING.

It was truly the best collection shown this week. I am so glad this time Mr. Bailey decided to show it in England and not Milan or New York. For me, it was a jewel in the crown of British fashion that's been missing for ages.

DOG OF THE WEEK

woof
RRR listeners may have heard Ramona mention on Monday that HML are the new champions of International Sock Dog Day. We've deemed this day to take place on October 18

To celebrate this momentous event we are hosting a Make Your Own Sock Dog session at the CAE.

as a result we have to develop the mad sock dog making skills to make you all proud...

The first hound is a little deranged, a little long limbed and in need of a nose and tail. But really he has his charms. So much so we have christened him Fredrick - after our favourite prince (apart from Prince of course - but that requires purple socks).

Express youself

Love Magazine

Looking for a new way to express yourself? Then printed t-shirts can be the answer you are looking for. It's so simple. All you have to do is to find the one that goes with your personality and show or says what you've got on your mind. Just remember that first impression is the one that counts big time.

Fashion designers seem to love this trend as it keep coming back every season and is definitely going to be trendy next summer, too.

If you still cannot find the one and only tee or a vest, then you can, of course, have a bespoke one. How chic and special does this sound! All you need to do is to find a photo, illustration or phrase you absolutely adore or live by, visit IndigoClothing, a company that specialises in customised t-shirt printing and works with organic cotton (so you can be one of the people who actually care for the environment), choose your future garment (trust me, you will be spoilt for choice!) and whether you want a print or embroidery and voilĂ ! It's done and will be with you within 7 working days. I think it's a fabulous idea and am going to get one of my own creations soon. I'll keep you posted.

In a meantime, enjoy some of the editorial photos and a few designer looks and be inspired!
